I have no idea why I continue to read Modesitt's books -- probably because my brother keeps giving them to me after he's read them. One thing I will say in this book's favour is the world-building is quite replete with possibilities, and the system of magic is actually quite interesting to me.The rest (plodding plot, characters) will be familiar if you've read any other Modesitt book, which is how it's possible to be as prolific as he is, I suppose. Good beach and beer fare.
